History
The “Pedestal Series” – the famous group of chairs and tables with a single leg made by Saarinen beginning in 1956 – met two needs: on one hand, they eliminated the “chaos” of chair and table legs inside the living space, bringing formal order. On the other hand, they gave the product a formal and constructive unity, honoring the principles of “organic design”: one form, one piece, one material (plastic). Saarinen was forced to give up this last principle: plastic could not hold great weights; therefore it was necessary to make the pedestal from an aluminium cast. However, he worked in prospect of a time in which production techniques would make his original idea possible. To give the forniture that fundamental constructive unity: “one piece, one material”. Bertoia chairs, with their abstract-geometric design, are made from a webbed structure of metal rods, which form both the back and the seat of the chair. Bertoia’s creations respond to practical criteria, but they are also the result of his studies on form, space and volume. In the same time, they testfy the incredibly fine manual metalworking techniques that Bertoia was a master of. Designed in 1952, the “Diamond Chair” was an immediate success and it is still in great demand all over the world. Some believe that Bertoia was influenced by his long term friendship and collaboration with Charles and Ray Eames. Certainly, in these chairs it is possible to recognize Bertoia the sculptor, with his approach to designing a chair mirroring his approach to sculpture. “Space passes through them” he said, “and, looking at them closely, our perception is that they are made of air, just like sculptures”. Polished or lacquered chromium-plated welded steel circle frame. Removable cushion filled with polyurethane foam with leather, fabric or pony upholstery.

E. Saarinen

(1910-1961)

Whatever you build, remember to keep both feet firmly planted on the ground.

Finnish architect and designer, Eero Saarinen studied sculpture in Paris and then architecture at Yale. He was awarded a scholarship, which enabled him to return to Europe for few years. When he went back to America, he joined the architecture practice of his father Eliel – a figure of great importance in the European Art Nouveau movement – contributing to major projects. During this period, he met Charles and Ray Eames.

Together, they created highly innovative furniture, which earned them a host of prizes during the early 1940s. They also worked on the “organic furniture”, furniture in a unified form and in a single material. Among his most renowned works as an architect, there are the CBS skyscraper in New York, the Dulles Airport in Washington D.C., and the TWA terminal, Kennedy Airport and Lincoln Center in New York city.
